Megalith Previews Necromagus

Megalith Games are previewing the Necromagus for the Mortans faction of Godslayer. He’s kinda cool…

Godslayer_Models_Mortans_Necromagus_Web

A Necromagus belongs to the Ordo Mortificarum and works in service to the state, employing the forces of undeath to further the aims of the empire.

All are required to spend at least several years assisting the legions on campaigns of conquests, during which they control the undead Legio Mortum soldiers, animate new monsters and provide defense against the attacks from spirits and higher dimensional enemies.

So steeped in necromancy are they that a Necromagus can suck the life-force out of nearby allies in order to heal themselves.

Necromagi are less experienced than the masters of Necromancy – the Mortifexes – but like them, Necromagi are battle-hardened, and able to cast spells even in melee, having become inured to the horrors of war.

Their spells and Ancestral Rites abilities increase the effectiveness and resilience of all undead models in the warband, making them an ideal support for a warband led by a Mortifex, and also an invaluable character in a mixed warband which includes some undead models.

Beyond the Gates of Antares

There really is so much awesome coming out in 2013 that it may just make my brain burst out of my head and leak out my ears.

web_logo

The specific dollop of awesome I refer to this time is Beyond the Gates of Antares by none other than wargaming legend Rick Priestly and his company Dark Space Corp. Currently on kickstarter, it looks all rather awesome. As one would expect from the chap that was involved with Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Necromunda and Bolt Action. Amongst many others.

Below is the video from the kickstarter page which shows off some of the art, toys and the man himself, along with other GW legend John Stallard, explain a little bit of what BtGoA is all about.

All in all, BtGoA looks really quite impressive. One of the biggest and most important aspects of which is the Real-Time Dynamic Gaming Universe. Or to put it another way, it’s a gaming universe that’ll move and change over time. Which seems in response to the fact that GW haven’t moved their IP on really at all in the last 30 years aside from the annual retcon. It’ll be interesting to see where Rick and co take RTDGU as if they do an ‘Eye of Terror’ and allow game results to impact on the fluff they can inadvertently cause their own universe to implode.

My other worry regards making a tabletop game partially online which will see only the most devout or determined gamers getting the most from it in terms of downloadable rules and bonuses as sectors are conquered by particular factions.

That said, the background is rich and interesting with lots of cool and dudey technology which will, no doubt lead to some mad as bat shit constructs. Like this one…

The factions are equally diverse and include a sentient robot race (dibs) and the Vorl which is the gribbly bastard you see below. And quite plainly, the models look pretty damn sexy.

3-858x1024If you’re interested in reading more about Beyond the Gates of Antares go here. And if you’re interested in supporting Dark Space Corp’s kickstarter campaign go here.

I’ll put up more information as soon as I get it.

What the Thon?

So what is THON? I’ll tell you what THON is: gorgeous.

Thon1

THON is also a face paced wargame that pits low-level engagement forces against one another in one of three game modes; verses (bog standard line up and mang each other in the face), narrative RPG and casual multiplayer. And have I mentioned that it’s gorgeous?

155472_372844922809364_1192976265_n

But gorgeousness aside THON does look like an interesting concept with a rich background which pleases me no end. This is what you can expect…

Core Set Contents
-Two variations of shock troops for each faction
-Two options for Commander/Overlord
-Two options for Multipurpose Units
-Heavy Support Unit
-Pocket Rule book
-Area of Effect Weapon
-Flash/Fury Dice

Versus Information
Versus is your standard head-to-head battle. Games last about 40 minutes to 1 Hour. Players alternate Move, Move, Shoot, Shoot (or move again), followed by Combat. Commanders and Overlords can buff units at any time, but only once per turn. They can increase movement, accuracy, damage or call in Orbital Support, to name just a few of their many dynamic abilities.

Narrative RPG Information
Narrative is your typical Pen and Paper RPG setting with a GM (called a Lar) and any number of players playing cooperatively to meet a goal. It includes more stats (seven total), more classes, character creation, currency and an expanded armory. Players create characters, choose classes, arm and equip and can immediately begin play with the Narrative provided, or create their own.

New Narrative Adventures will be released periodically.

SCOMA Information
Multiplayer (Defined as three or more) is called ’SCOMA’ (Self-Contained Mobile Armor) and is the most casual of all. It is a design-your-own free-for-all. Players decide on an experience pool and build a character using those points. With these, players battle it out in a PvP arena. There is a grid included that lists all relevant skills, their in-game effects and weapon/equipment, and stat costs.

As characters play a very important part in THON the table above gives you some idea of how you can buff them, and your units, out. This is all rather promising then. And with artwork like the one below…487201_317187255041798_1236024117_nAnd models like these…

14596_383376498422873_1855969212_n

It’s all starting to look a bit tasty. Indications are that THON will be out Q2 this year so expect more information in the coming weeks.

Horus Heresy Graphic Novel

Rumour had it that a Horus Heresy graphic novel was in development, but with images now floating about the interwebs it would appear to be true.  My initial excitement has been somewhat tarnished by news that it’ll be a CG render job. Space Marines don’t translate brilliantly in this medium (Warhammer 40,000 movie anyone). If nothing else because renders have a nasty habit of making anything that’s painted metal come out looking ultra glossy and golds a ruddy matt colour.

Anyway, it’s early days yet and as long as the writing is of the calibre of the novels then it’ll still be a winner. I’m under no illusions that I’ll resist. Here’s a couple of grabs for your viewing pleasure…

Even More Dystopian Legions Previews

How much can I get for a kidney? 30 years old, reasonably good condition…

“Prussian infantry advancing on the left? Splendid! I thought we wouldn’t get a chance to thrash them before sundown.”

-First Lieutenant Arthur Wickes, 28th Regiment of Foot (Suffolk), Her Majesty’s Army of Flanders

The officer corps of Britannian regiments has traditionally been drawn from the nation’s upper class. Many old Britannian families have a long and honourable tradition of military service.

Britannian field officers are mostly still seen as a breed apart by the troops under their command. What comes as a surprise to outside observers is that this often serves to strengthen the bond between commissioned officers and the regular soldiers.

Britannian officers, aware of their reputation, go to great lengths to remain absolutely unflappable even in the face of the worst tribulations. As far as they are concerned, a panicking commander is of no use to anyone. In turn, the regular troops harbour great respect for their leaders that stems from more than mere status.

Trained in prestigious military colleges such as Sandhurst, Britannian officers command with a combination of easy confidence and unshakeable self-belief. Junior officers in particular, the lieutenants and captains are also noted for leading from the front, never hesitating to put themselves in the line of fire if their presence is needed.

However, as the war progresses a new breed of officer is beginning to appear in the Britannian army, especially the newer regiments. These men, hard-bitten veterans, have been ‘raised from the ranks’.

At first, this was a controversial move. Some of the more traditional Britannian generals feared that the troops would not hold leaders who came from their own ‘sort’ in the same kind of respect as officers drawn from upper classes.

However, for the most part, these fears have not been borne out. Although they might lack some of the awe in which their upper-class peers are held by the soldiery, these rougher-edged leaders make up for it with sheer grit and battle experience. A slight lack of etiquette in the mess is now seen by even the stuffiest of military traditionalists as a fair price to pay for battles won for Queen and country!

Tactical Use:
The Kingdom of Britannia is famous for the quality of its officers, and their Lieutenants are no exception. In combat the main value of a Lieutenant is to influence their men with their powerful Command Abilities,Focus Fire and On My Mark.

The Focus Fire Command Ability represents an officer co-ordinating the musketry of a nearby Section, making them much more likely to hit their targets. This ability is incredibly important to any Ranged Attack-heavy Britannian force.

The On My Mark Command Ability is a rather different tool, allowing a Section to react immediately if they come under attack from enemy fire. Beyond the obvious advantage of being able to hit back before having your firepower reduced by the incoming attack, this ability can have a terrible psychological effect on your opponent. Would you really want to fire on a section if you well know that you’ll be taking more punishment back in return?

A Britannian Lieutenant can do more than just shout orders. A lifestyle involving shooting, fencing and horse riding means every officer is fighting fit and handy with a sabre and a pistol. Additionally, most officers buy their own weapons before heading out on campaign, meaning Britannian commanders can rely on a good deal of personal firepower.

A common choice for officers heading out at the moment is the powerful Windshear Ray Projector, a weapon able to shred a man or machine in moments. This allows the Lieutenant to pack a surprisingly powerful punch at point-blank range – perfect for finishing off any dazed stragglers who escaped the wrath of rifle and flamethrower!

“Every shot needs to count, my lads. Can’t go wasting Her Majesty’s ammunition now, can we?”

-Sergeant Albert Trieves, 33rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Berkshires)

For centuries, the armies of Britannia have relied on a solid core of well-trained, professional Riflemen. Since the unification of the British Isles as the Kingdom of Britannia, its red-coated soldiers have fought on nearly every continent, and their battles have taken them to the very ends of the earth.

From tiny islands in bleak oceanic fastnesses to the searing deserts of Africa and the dense jungles of South Asia, Britannia’s soldiers have marched to battle in the name of monarch and country. Through all of this, the Britannians have maintained a reputation for battle skill and resolution that far outweighed their relatively small numbers.

Prime among these attributes is their sheer stubbornness and will to win. Many times Queen Victoria’s forces have emerged from campaigns in triumph through their sheer unwillingness to accept defeat. Dogged endurance has seen even small expeditionary forces overwhelm many foes that should have beaten them.

The modern Britannian army is one of the most heavily mechanised forces in the world o, but large numbers of foot soldiers still form its beating heart. These days they are almost always furnished with specialist support weaponry and armoured units. However, there is still a tradition of rigorous – sometimes harsh – training that turns out hardy and resolute soldiers. This has ensured that Britannia’s infantry are still a formidable power in the field in their own right.

Although supported by soldiers from all over Britannia’s vast imperial territories, the core of the Kingdom’s forces are the English, Welsh, Scots and Irish regiments of the home army. The majority of them are well-trained professionals in the tradition of Wellington’s armies of the Prussian Wars. Often tied into twenty-five years or more of service, many are skilled veterans of battles all over the world to protect and expand Queen Victoria’s empire.

However the outbreak of the World War, especially the London Raid, has seen vast numbers of volunteers sign up for military service. Nicknamed ‘Short-Shrifters’ by the old professionals, what these new soldiers lack in experience they more than make up for in energy and patriotic fervour.

Rigorous musketry drill has always been the hallmark of Britannian regiments. Even now, all regular soldiers still use breach-loaders rather than repeating rifles, but thanks to their training they are able to put up walls of fire so ferocious that enemy troops assume they have additional machine-guns in support.

Although never quite as numerous as the conscript armies of other great nations, Britannia’s ‘thin red lines of heroes’, held firm by the bellowing exhortations of their sergeants are more than capable of holding their own against any opponent.

The Britannians have a well-earned reputation for fighting on in the face of even the most impossible odds. This attitude is exemplified by actions such as the 3rd Northamptonshire Rifles, who defended the Falkland Islands almost to the last unwounded man against Blazing Sun forces who outnumbered them more than ten to one.

Just recently, Britannian regiments have been issued with the fearsome Mk III Ricardo portable flamethrower. These specialists use the fiery fury of their weapons to keep the enemy away from their comrades in the firing line, allowing the riflemen to keep up their deadly torrents of lead as long as possible. On the attack, they are even more formidable, burning enemy troops out of fortified positions as the riflemen advance in line.

Tactical Use:
A Britannian Line Infantry Section has a clear-cut and simple job; to take up a secure position, preferably in cover and then hurl volley after volley of shots into the enemy ranks.

Line Infantry Riflemen simply cannot be matched at range by any of the mainstay Sections of the other Great Powers. The Martini-Metford rifle and its users’ marksmanship skills means that a section of Redcoats can fire accurately out to a distance from which most enemy small arms cannot respond.

The Britannian Line Infantry will never be lacking for able leadership either, as each Section may include a Sergeant for no additional cost. This gives them limited ability to function independently.

Furthermore, if a Section benefits from the Focus Fire Command Ability of the Britannian Lieutenant an opposing section in open ground could feasibly be wiped out by a single volley. If the Line Infantry use their “Volley Fire Present – Fire!” Game Card, you can expect to see the enemy stop dead in their tracks, unable to draw any closer.

Although your Riflemen are vulnerable if you get them involved in a Melee, a Britannian Line Infantry Section needn’t worry if the enemy draws near – a hosing from the Specialist’s Flamethrower will soon send them packing!

Covenant of Antarctica Reinforcements

Just when I thought my Covenant fleet was completed Spartan Games have gone and released a preview of two new units including a submersible. It looks like the 5th Fleet will be getting a submariner detachment…

The Fresnel Class Support Cruiser is a new and terrible weapon that has only recently been encountered amongst the fleets of the Frozen South.

The warship is, in most respects of a conventional design, if you can ever call a ship of the Covenant Ghost Fleet in any way conventional. However, the rather considerable exception to this is the energy weapon mounted atop the its spine.

From what can been gathered from photographic aeroplanes, this weapon is far more than a mere up-scaled energy weapon. Upon closer inspection one will see that the objects along the broadsides are not the unusual gun-spheres, but some kind of strange electrical apparatus. Likewise, the great turret atop the ship is not as it appears, whilst it has clearly been seen firing beams of radiant energy, it is not an energy turret, but a great, articulated assembly of lenses.

The only rational conclusion that can be drawn with these facts is that the Fresnel is nothing less than a water-borne focusing array for Covenant Energy Weapons. The beams fired from other vessels entering the ship by its sides, before being focused, refined and amplified into a single attack, far more powerful than the sum of its parts.

Annonnax Class Submersible

The Annonnax is without any doubt one of the strangest, most inconceivable and technologically advanced machines yet seen to come out of the Covenant of Antarctica.

The fighting machine’s existence has only been confirmed in the past few weeks, with multiple sightings of its use in combat along the northern cost, however for several months now there has been reports of weapons shipments coming under fatal attack from supposed ‘sea monsters’.

From the information that has been gathered, and from ample speculation by the scientific community, the following has been established. The Annonnax is a submersible, yet able to come aground and move like a writhing snake – making it equally at home travelling overground or underwater.

Although details are still uncertain, it appears that the great machine strikes at its prey – be it a warship or a tank – by ramming it and attacking with its great mechanical maw.

It also appears to have some kind of powerful energy weapon, although any exact details of this are unknown at this time, as regrettably, no one who has yet encountered the weapon at close range has survived to report back.
